The Difference Between Good and Bad Writing
The Difference Between Good and Bad Writing Here are 10 scholars and editors, extending from Cicero to Stephen King, offering their musings on the contrasts between great essayists and awful authors. 1. Dont Expect It to Be Easy You recognize what, it is so entertaining. A decent author will consistently think that its exceptionally difficult to fill a solitary page. A terrible essayist will consistently think that its simple. (Aubrey Kalitera, Why Father Why, 1983) 2. Ace the Fundamentals I am moving toward the core of this book with two theories, both basic. The first is that acceptable composing comprises of acing the basics (jargon, language structure, the components of style) and afterward filling the third degree of your tool stash with the correct instruments. The second is that while it is difficult to make a capable author out of a terrible essayist, and keeping in mind that it is similarly difficult to make an extraordinary author out of a decent one, it is conceivable, with loads of difficult work, devotion, and opportune assistance, to make a decent essayist out of an only skilled one. (Stephen King, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, 2000) 3. State What You Think An awful essayist is an author who consistently says more than he might suspect. A decent writerand here we should be cautious in the event that we wish to show up at any genuine insightis an essayist who doesn't state more than he might suspect. (Walter Benjamin, diary passage, Selected Writings: Volume 3, 1935-1938) 4. Reach for the Best Word It is the abuse and abuse of vogue words that the great author must make preparations for. . . . It is phenomenal how frequently you will discover vogue words went with in a similar sentence by self importance or messiness or different indications of disorder. No driver is to be accused for sounding his horn. In any case, in the event that he sounds it over and over we are not just insulted by the commotion; we presume him of being a terrible driver in different regards as well. (Ernest Gowers, The Complete Plain Words, updated by Sidney Greenbaum and Janet Whitcut, 2002) 5. Request Your Words The distinction between a decent and a terrible essayist is appeared by the request for his words as much as by the determination of them. (Marcus Tullius Cicero, The Oration for Plancius, 54 B.C.) 6. Take care of the Details There are terrible scholars who are careful in sentence structure, jargon, and grammar, erring just through their inhumanity toward tone. Frequently they are among the most noticeably terrible scholars of all. Be that as it may, overall, it tends to be said that terrible composing goes to the roots: It has just turned out badly underneath its own earth. Since a significant part of the language is figurative in starting point, a terrible essayist will scramble illustrations in a solitary expression, regularly in a solitary word... Capable journalists consistently look at what they have put down. Better-than-capable scholars great essayists analyze their belongings before they put them down: They imagine that way constantly. Terrible scholars look at nothing. Their absentmindedness to the detail of their composition is an integral part of their obliviousness to the detail of the outside world. (Clive James, Georg Christoph Lichtenberg: Lessons on How to Write. Social Amnesia, 2007) 7. Dont Fake It Over the span of a genuinely long work, there will undoubtedly be stalemates. The author must backtrack and pick different other options, watch more, and at times have terrible migraines till heâ invents something. Here untruths the differentiation between a decent author and a terrible essayist. A decent author doesn't phony it and attempt to cause it to show up, to himself or the peruser, that there is a cognizant and plausible entire when there isnt. In the event that the author is in good shape, be that as it may, things become alright; his sentences demonstrate to have all the more significance and developmental force that he expected; he has new experiences; and the book thinks of itself. (Paul Goodman, Apology for Literature. Editorial, July 1971) 8. Realize When to Quit Each and every individual who composes takes a stab at something very similar. To state it quickly, obviously, to state the hard thing that way, utilizing barely any words. Not to gum up the section. To realize when to stop when youve done. Also, not to have aftereffects of different thoughts filtering in unnoticed. Great composing is definitely similar to great dressing. Awful composing resembles a seriously dressed lady ill-advised accentuation, gravely picked hues. (William Carlos Williams, survey of Sol Funaroffs The Spider and the Clock, in New Masses, August 16, 1938) 9. Incline toward Editors The less capable the essayist, the stronger his fights over the altering. . . . Great journalists incline toward editors; they would not consider distributing something that no editorial manager had perused. Awful essayists talk about the sacred mood of their composition. (Gardner Bots portage, A Life of Privilege, Mostly, 2003) 10. Set out to Be Bad Thus, so as to be a decent essayist, I must be eager to be a terrible author. I must be eager to leave my considerations and pictures alone as conflicting as the night terminating its firecrackers outside my window. As it were, let it all in-each and every detail that gets your extravagant. You can sift through it later-on the off chance that it needs any arranging. (Julia Cameron, The Right to Write: An Invitation and Initiation Into the Writing Life, 2000) Lastly, heres a depressed note to great authors from English writer and writer Zadie Smith: Resign yourself to the deep rooted misery that originates from never à being fulfilled.

Heres what you need to know about the effectiveness and safety of St. Johns wort for treating childhood depression. What Is St. Johns Wort? St. Johns wort is an over-the-counter natural herb also known as Hypericum perforatum, Klamath weed, hypericum, and goatweed. The flowering plant can be used for many purposes and is available in a variety of forms. The extract can be used alone or in combination with other herbs as a nutritional supplement in a capsule, tablet, liquid, or topical product. The flowering tops of the St. Johns wort plant is often used in teas. People have reported using the herb to treat a wide variety of symptoms and disorders including depression, nerve pain, sleep problems, and anxiety. St. Johns wort was also investigated as a potential treatment for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, however, the research found it to be ineffective.?? What Is St. Johns Wort? What the Research Says About Use in Children The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine states that the research on St. Johns wort has provided inconsistent results and therefore it doesnt consider it to be an effective treatment for depression.?? However, there have been studies that appear to demonstrate St. Johns worts potential effectiveness for treating depressive symptoms in adults, both when compared to a placebo and prescription depression medications such as Zoloft (sertraline).?? When used appropriately, St. Johns wort may be comparable to serotonin reuptake inhibitors (such as Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa, Zoloft, and others) in effectiveness and safety for treating depression in adults. However, the use of St. Johns wort for depression in children has not been well-studied. There have not been many studies specifically assessing the use of St. Johns wort in the treatment of childhood depression. A study from 2003 included boys between the ages of 6 and 16 found that of the 33 youths in the study, 25 met response criteria (based on responses to a depression rating scale) after taking St. Johns wort for 8 weeks and didnt have any major side effects from taking the herb. This data is promising, but doesnt compare St. Johns wort with placebo.?? Another study in 2005 found that some adolescents with mild depression might benefit from using St. Johns wort. However, the study did not look specifically at improvement of depressive systems as an outcome variable. In both studies, the researchers noted the need for additional research to support the findings, particularly with placebo-controlled trials. Use in Children vs. Adults Studies that look at how a medication works for adults cant always be used to show how it would work in children. There are many factors that determine how a medication or supplement might affect a child, and its not necessarily as simple as giving them a lower dose of a drug because they are smaller than an adult. One example of this phenomenon is the use of prescription antidepressant medications in children. A potential danger of antidepressant use in people under the age of 25 is an increase in suicidal thoughts or behavior. While the side effect is uncommon, it was significant enough that the FDA put a black box warning on all prescription antidepressants. Its unclear if natural and herbal supplements could carry the same risk. But if St. Johns wort can alter neurotransmitters in a way thats similar to how antidepressant medications work, the question would be of valid concern for researchers, medical professionals, alternative medicine practitioners, and anyone considering using it. Its important to remember that a diagnosis of depression alone is associated with a higher risk of suicide, regardless of treatment. If someone you love is depressed, make sure you know the warning signs of suicide. What to Do If Your Child Has Suicidal Thoughts Medication Interactions St. Johns wort has the potential to interact with many commonly used medications. The FDA issued a public health advisory about these possible interactions and maintains an updated database of drug-herb interactions. Due to its effect on enzymes in the liver, St. Johns wort has the potential to either decrease the levels (and effectiveness) of medications, or increase levels which raises the risk of toxicity. While many of these reactions are minor, dangerous and life-threatening reactions can occur if St. Johns wort is combined with certain drugs. Medications that may interact with St. Johns wort include: Antidepressants (Combining St. Johns wort with serotonin reuptake inhibitors may result in serotonin syndrome.)Cough and cold preparationsOral contraceptives (i.e., birth control pills)Seizure medicationsDrugs used to treat cancerBlood thinners such as Coumadin (warfarin)Heart disease medication such as digoxinMedications used to reduce the risk of organ transplant rejectionAntibioticsHIV drugs such as Crixivan (indinavir) and Viramune (nevirapine)Other herbal and nutritional supplements If you are considering using St. Johns wort for your child, its important to talk to your pediatrician or child psychiatrist about any medications, herbal supplements, over-the-counter drugs, or vitamins that your child is taking. St. Johns Wort and Antidepressants Adverse Effects Its sometimes thought that herbal medications are safer or that they dont have side effects because they are natural, but this is simply not true. Herbal preparations can increase the risk of adverse effects just as prescription drugs can. The fact that St. Johns wort is plant-based makes some people feel that these products are safer than traditional drugs, but its important to keep in mind that many prescription medications, including some blood thinners and strong chemotherapy agents, are also plant-based. Common side effects of St. Johns wort include sensitivity to sunlight, dry mouth, dizziness, stomach upset, fatigue, headache, and anxiety. Parents should weigh the risks and benefits of any herbal products much the same way as they would a prescription drug. This can be difficult as herbal products are not regulated to the same degree in the United States. Talking With Your Pediatrician If your child is depressed and you would like to try complementary treatments, discuss the possibility with your childs pediatrician or psychiatrist. Your childs doctor can discuss the risks and benefits of St. Johns wort with you and help determine the best treatment options for your childs specific circumstances. With a few exceptions, most general practitioners may be unfamiliar with both the potential benefits and risks of St. Johns wort and may only prescribe it infrequently. If you are unsure if your childs symptoms are part of a depressive disorder, ask your pediatrician about having an evaluation. Its best to have your child seen by a psychiatrist or other mental health professional before trying any natural remedies for depression. If you have started using St. Johns wort or any herbal supplement with your child, you must tell your childs doctor due to the potential for serious interactions with other medications that may be prescribed. Importance of Addressing Childhood Depression Depression is not uncommon in children and can be serious. St. Johns wort may or may not be an appropriate treatment, but you have already taken a major and important step by considering the presence of depressive symptoms in your child. Childhood depression can be difficult to diagnose, as warning signs of depression in young children arent always recognized. From extreme shyness to irritability and anger, many parents assume they facing a behavioral issue rather than depression. If you believe your child may have depression, talk to your pediatrician. They can help you learn more about using medications to treat depression in children, and how the process may be different than the approach used in adults. Ultimately, the most comprehensive treatment for childhood depression will involve more than finding the right drug or supplement. Building a network of support is an important step for the well being of your entire family. Your childs doctor can refer you to others, such as mental health specialists and social workers, who you can work with to create a plan for your child at home and school, as well as provide support for your family. Supporting Independent Living Free Essay Example, 2250 words
Sallyââ¬â¢s car is also adapted with a spinner knob as well as a left foot gas pedal. She is also given a larger keyboard with large black letters to aid in typing. These two are additional examples of adaptive technologies that are used for independent living. Communication Technology Communication technologies are provided to enhance or replace the normal human communication. Some of the aids are given to replace speech. There are different kinds of communication aids that are available for the health and social care services users (Kirklees Council. , 2014). The direct select aid is an example where choice is indicated directly by pointing any part of the body (Buckinghamshire Council, 2014). An example of such a device is the Light writer. Scanning and encoding devices are also used to facilitate communication and promote independent living (Hertfordshire Council, 2014) Barriers to use of Technology to Support Independent Living Despite the benefits that are associated with the use of technology in promoting independent living among the users of health and social car services, there exist several barriers that undermine its application (Ripat and Booth, 2005). Cost and funding is one of the barriers to the use of technology. We will write a custom essay sample on Supporting Independent Living or any topic specifically for you Only $17.96 $11.86/pageorder now Some health and social service providers are not able to afford the technologies that facilitate independent living (Robitaille, 2010). Some patients who require these products are at times faced with financial constraints that make them unable to pay for the services. In the case study on Sally, the specialists recommends several assistive devices such as eye patch, gardening aid, cooking tools, larger keyboard and also advices that Sallyââ¬â¢s car be fitted with left foot accelerator. All these require money and in some cases the patients are not able to afford all the devices required for independent living. Another barrier is the lack of appropriate staff training and support. A number of assistive devices are high tech and require training of staff on their usage as well as maintenance. Lack of this training has been one of the main barriers to the use of assistive technology (Ripat and Booth, 2005). The GP refers Sally to a driverââ¬â ¢s trainer specialist to change the accelerator of her car and to train her on using the car with new modifications. This is an indicator that some assistive devices and technologies may require specialized training hence limiting their application. Negative attitude of the staff as well as the users of health and social services hampers the incorporation of technology to facilitate independent living.

The Twilight Saga 5 Midnight Sun 6. Blood Type Free Essays
I followed her all day through other peopleââ¬â¢s eyes, barely aware of my own surroundings. Not Mike Newtonââ¬â¢s eyes, because I couldnââ¬â¢t stand any more of his offensive fantasies, and not Jessica Stanleyââ¬â¢s, because her resentment toward Bella made me angry in a way that was not safe for the petty girl. Angela Weber was a good choice when her eyes were available; she was kind ââ¬â her head was an easy place to be. We will write a custom essay sample on The Twilight Saga 5: Midnight Sun 6. Blood Type or any similar topic only for you Order Now And then sometimes it was the teachers who provided the best view. I was surprised, watching her stumble through the day ââ¬â tripping over cracks in the sidewalk, stray books, and, most often, her own feet ââ¬â that the people I eavesdropped on thought of Bella as clumsy. I considered that. It was true that she often had trouble staying upright. I remembered her stumbling into the desk that first day, sliding around on the ice before the accident, falling over the low lip of the doorframe yesterdayâ⬠¦ How odd, they were right. She was clumsy. I didnââ¬â¢t know why this was so funny to me, but I laughed out loud as I walked from American History to English and several people shot me wary looks. How had I never noticed this before? Perhaps because there was something very graceful about her in stillness, the way she held her head, the arch of her neckâ⬠¦ There was nothing graceful about her now. Mr. Varner watched as she caught the toe of her boot on the carpet and literally fell into her chair. I laughed again. The time moved with incredible sluggishness while I waited for my chance to see her with my own eyes. Finally, the bell rang. I strode quickly to the cafeteria to secure my spot. I was one of the first there. I chose a table that was usually empty, and was sure to remain that way with me seated here. When my family entered and saw me sitting alone in a new place, they were not surprised. Alice must have warned them. Rosalie stalked past me without a glance. Idiot. Rosalie and I had never had an easy relationship ââ¬â Iââ¬â¢d offended her the very first time sheââ¬â¢d heard me speak, and it was downhill from there ââ¬â but it seemed like she was even more ill-tempered than usual the last few days. I sighed. Rosalie made everything about herself. Jasper gave me half a smile as he walked by. Good luck, he thought doubtfully. Emmett rolled his eyes and shook his head. Lost his mind, poor kid. Alice was beaming, her teeth shining too brightly. Can I talk to Bella now ââ¬Å"Keep out of it,â⬠I said under my breath. Her face fell, and then brightened again. Fine. Be stubborn. Itââ¬â¢s only a matter of time. I sighed again. Donââ¬â¢t forget about todayââ¬â¢s biology lab, she reminded me. I nodded. No, I hadnââ¬â¢t forgotten that. While I waited for Bella to arrive, I followed her in the eyes of the freshman who was walking behind Jessica on his way to the cafeteria. Jessica was babbling about the upcoming dance, but Bella said nothing in response. Not that Jessica gave her much of a chance. The moment Bella walked through the door, her eyes flashed to the table where my siblings sat. She stared for a moment, and then her forehead crumpled and her eyes dropped to the floor. She hadnââ¬â¢t noticed me here. She looked soâ⬠¦sad. I felt a powerful urge to get up and go to her side, to comfort her somehow, only I didnââ¬â¢t know what she would find comforting. I had no idea what made her look that way. Jessica continued to jabber about the dance. Was Bella sad that she was going to miss it? That didnââ¬â¢t seem likelyâ⬠¦ But that could be remedied, if she wished. She bought a drink for her lunch and nothing else. Was that right? Didnââ¬â¢t she need more nutrition than that? Iââ¬â¢d never paid much attention to a humanââ¬â¢s diet before. Humans were quite exasperatingly fragile! There were a million different things to worry aboutâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Edward Cullen is staring at you again,â⬠I heard Jessica say. ââ¬Å"I wonder why heââ¬â¢s sitting alone today?â⬠I was grateful to Jessica ââ¬â though she was even more resentful now ââ¬â because Bellaââ¬â¢s head snapped up and her eyes searched until they met mine. There was no trace of sadness in her face now. I let myself hope that sheââ¬â¢d been sad because sheââ¬â¢d thought Iââ¬â¢d left school early, and that hope made me smile. I motioned with my finger for her to join me. She looked so startled by this that I wanted to tease her again. So I winked, and her mouth fell open. ââ¬Å"Does he mean you?â⬠Jessica asked rudely. ââ¬Å"Maybe he needs help with his Biology homework,â⬠she said in a low, uncertain voice. ââ¬Å"Um, Iââ¬â¢d better go see what he wants.â⬠This was another yes. She stumbled twice on her way to my table, though there was nothing in her way but perfectly even linoleum. Seriously, how had I missed this before? Iââ¬â¢d been paying more attention to her silent thoughts, I supposedâ⬠¦ What else had I missed? Keep it honest, keep it light, I chanted to myself. She stopped behind the chair across from me, hesitating. I inhaled deeply, through my nose this time rather than my mouth. Feel the burn, I thought dryly. ââ¬Å"Why donââ¬â¢t you sit with me today?â⬠I asked her. She pulled the chair out and sat, staring at me the whole while. She seemed nervous, but her physical acceptance was yet another yes. I waited for her to speak. It took a moment, but, finally, she said, ââ¬Å"This is different.â⬠ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I hesitated. ââ¬Å"I decided as long as I was going to hell, I might as well do it thoroughly.â⬠What had made me say that? I supposed it was honest, at least. And perhaps sheââ¬â¢d hear the unsubtle warning my words implied. Maybe she would realize that she should get up and walk away as quickly as possibleâ⬠¦ She didnââ¬â¢t get up. She stared at me, waiting, as if Iââ¬â¢d left my sentence unfinished. ââ¬Å"You know I donââ¬â¢t have any idea what you mean,â⬠she said when I didnââ¬â¢t continue. That was a relief. I smiled. ââ¬Å"I know.â⬠It was hard to ignore the thoughts screaming at me from behind her back ââ¬â and I wanted to change the subject anyway. ââ¬Å"I think your friends are angry at me for stealing you.â⬠This did not appear to concern her. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢ll survive.â⬠ââ¬Å"I may not give you back, though.â⬠I didnââ¬â¢t even know if I was trying to be honest now, or just trying to tease her again. Being near her made it hard to make sense of my own thoughts. Bella swallowed loudly. I laughed at her expression. ââ¬Å"You look worried.â⬠It really shouldnââ¬â¢t be funnyâ⬠¦ She should worry. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠She was a bad liar; it didnââ¬â¢t help that her voice broke. ââ¬Å"Surprised, actuallyâ⬠¦. What brought this on?â⬠ââ¬Å"I told you,â⬠I reminded her. ââ¬Å"I got tired of trying to stay away from you. So Iââ¬â¢m giving up.â⬠I held my smile in place with a bit of effort. This wasnââ¬â¢t working at all ââ¬â trying to be honest and casual at the same time. ââ¬Å"Giving up?â⬠she repeated, baffled. ââ¬Å"Yes ââ¬â giving up trying to be good.â⬠And, apparently, giving up trying to be casual. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m just going to do what I want now, and let the chips fall where they may.â⬠That was honest enough. Let her see my selfishness. Let that warn her, too. ââ¬Å"You lost me again.â⬠I was selfish enough to be glad that this was the case. ââ¬Å"I always say too much when Iââ¬â¢m talking to you ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s one of the problems.â⬠A rather insignificant problem, compared to the rest. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t worry,â⬠she reassured me. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t understand any of it.â⬠Good. Then sheââ¬â¢d stay. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m counting on that.â⬠ââ¬Å"So, in plain English, are we friends now?â⬠I pondered that for a second. ââ¬Å"Friendsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ I repeated. I didnââ¬â¢t like the sound of that. It wasnââ¬â¢t enough. ââ¬Å"Or not,â⬠she mumbled, looking embarrassed. Did she think I didnââ¬â¢t like her that much? I smiled. ââ¬Å"Well, we can try, I suppose. But Iââ¬â¢m warning you now that Iââ¬â¢m not a good friend for you.â⬠I waited for her response, torn in two ââ¬â wishing she would finally hear and understand, thinking I might die if she did. How melodramatic. I was turning into such a human. Her heart beat faster. ââ¬Å"You say that a lot.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, because youââ¬â¢re not listening to me,â⬠I said, too intense again. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m still waiting for you to believe it. If youââ¬â¢re smart, youââ¬â¢ll avoid me.â⬠Ah, but would I allow her to do that, if she tried? Her eyes tightened. ââ¬Å"I think youââ¬â¢ve made your opinion on the subject of my intellect clear, too.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t exactly sure what she meant, but I smiled in apology, guessing that I must have offended her accidentally. ââ¬Å"So,â⬠she said slowly. ââ¬Å"As long as Iââ¬â¢m beingâ⬠¦not smart, weââ¬â¢ll try to be friends?â⬠ââ¬Å"That sounds about right.â⬠She looked down, staring intently at the lemonade bottle in her hands. The old curiosity tormented me. ââ¬Å"What are you thinking?â⬠I asked ââ¬â it was a relief to say the words out loud at last. She met my gaze, and her breathing sped while her cheeks flushed faint pink. I inhaled, tasting that in the air. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m trying to figure out what you are.â⬠I held the smile on my face, locking my features that way, while panic twisted through my body. Of course she was wondering that. She wasnââ¬â¢t stupid. I couldnââ¬â¢t hope for her to be oblivious to something so obvious. ââ¬Å"Are you having any luck with that?â⬠I asked as lightly as I could manage. ââ¬Å"Not too much,â⬠she admitted. I chuckled in sudden relief. ââ¬Å"What are your theories?â⬠They couldnââ¬â¢t be worse than the truth, no matter what sheââ¬â¢d come up with. Her cheeks turned brighter red, and she said nothing. I could feel the warmth of her blush in the air. I tried using my persuasive tone on her. It worked well on normal humans. ââ¬Å"Wonââ¬â¢t you tell me?â⬠I smiled encouragingly. She shook her head. ââ¬Å"Too embarrassing.â⬠Ugh. Not knowing was worse than anything else. Why would her speculations embarrass her? I couldnââ¬â¢t stand not knowing. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s really frustrating, you know.â⬠My complaint sparked something in her. Her eyes flashed and her words flowed more swiftly than usual. ââ¬Å"No, I canââ¬â¢t imagine why that would be frustrating at all ââ¬â just because someone refuses to tell you what theyââ¬â¢re thinking, even if all the while theyââ¬â¢re making cryptic little remarks specifically designed to keep you up at night wondering what they could possibly meanâ⬠¦now, why would that be frustrating?â⬠I frowned at her, upset to realize that she was right. I wasnââ¬â¢t being fair. She went on. ââ¬Å"Or better, say that person also did a wide range of bizarre things ââ¬â from saving your life under impossible circumstances one day to treating you like a pariah the next, and he never explained any of that either, even after he promised. That, also, would be very non-frustrating.â⬠It was the longest speech Iââ¬â¢d ever heard her make, and it gave me a new quality for my list. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢ve got a bit of a temper, donââ¬â¢t you?â⬠ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t like double standards.â⬠She was completely justified in her irritation, of course. I stared at Bella, wondering how I could possibly do anything right by her, until the silent shouting in Mike Newtonââ¬â¢s head distracted me. He was so irate that it made me chuckle. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠she demanded. ââ¬Å"Your boyfriend seems to think Iââ¬â¢m being unpleasant to you ââ¬â heââ¬â¢s debating whether or not to come break up our fight.â⬠I would love to see him try. I laughed again. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know who youââ¬â¢re talking about,â⬠she said in an icy voice. ââ¬Å"But Iââ¬â¢m sure youââ¬â¢re wrong anyway.â⬠I very much enjoyed the way she disowned him with her dismissive sentence. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not. I told you, most people are easy to read.â⬠ââ¬Å"Except me, of course.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes. Except for you.â⬠Did she have to be the exception to everything? Wouldnââ¬â¢t it have been more fair ââ¬â considering everything else I had to deal with now ââ¬â if I could have at least heard something from her head? Was that so much to ask? ââ¬Å"I wonder why that is?â⬠I stared into her eyes, trying againâ⬠¦ She looked away. She opened her lemonade and took a quick drink, her eyes on the table. ââ¬Å"Arenââ¬â¢t you hungry?â⬠I asked. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠She eyed the empty table between us. ââ¬Å"You?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, Iââ¬â¢m not hungry,â⬠I said. I was definitely not that. She stared at the table her lips pursed. I waited. ââ¬Å"Could you do me a favor?â⬠she asked, suddenly meeting my gaze again. What would she want from me? Would she ask for the truth that I wasnââ¬â¢t allowed to tell her ââ¬â the truth I didnââ¬â¢t want her to ever, ever know? ââ¬Å"That depends on what you want.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not much,â⬠she promised. I waited, curious again. ââ¬Å"I just wonderedâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ she said slowly, staring at the lemonade bottle, tracing its lip with her littlest finger. ââ¬Å"If you could warn me beforehand the next time you decide to ignore me for my own good? Just so Iââ¬â¢m prepared.â⬠She wanted a warning? Then being ignored by me must be a bad thingâ⬠¦ I smiled. ââ¬Å"That sounds fair,â⬠I agreed. ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠she said, looking up. Her face was so relieved that I wanted to laugh with my own relief. ââ¬Å"Then can I have one in return?â⬠I asked hopefully. ââ¬Å"One,â⬠she allowed. ââ¬Å"Tell me one theory.â⬠She flushed. ââ¬Å"Not that one.â⬠ââ¬Å"You didnââ¬â¢t qualify, you just promised one answer,â⬠I argued. ââ¬Å"And youââ¬â¢ve broken promises yourself,â⬠she argued back. She had me there. ââ¬Å"Just one theory ââ¬â I wonââ¬â¢t laugh.â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes, you will.â⬠She seemed very sure of that, though I couldnââ¬â¢t imagine anything that would be funny about it. I gave persuasion another try. I stared deep into her eyes ââ¬â an easy thing to do, with eyes so deep ââ¬â and whispered, ââ¬Å"Please?â⬠She blinked, and her face went blank. Well, that wasnââ¬â¢t exactly the reaction Iââ¬â¢d been going for. ââ¬Å"Er, what?â⬠she asked. She looked dizzy. What was wrong with her? But I wasnââ¬â¢t giving up yet. ââ¬Å"Please tell me just one little theory,â⬠I pleaded in my soft, non-scary voice, holding her eyes in mine. To my surprise and satisfaction, it finally worked. ââ¬Å"Um, well, bitten by a radioactive spider?â⬠Comic books? No wonder she thought I would laugh. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s not very creative,â⬠I chided her, trying to hide my fresh relief. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry, thatââ¬â¢s all Iââ¬â¢ve got,â⬠she said, offended. This relieved me even more. I was able to tease her again. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re not even close.â⬠ââ¬Å"No spiders?â⬠ââ¬Å"Nope.â⬠ââ¬Å"And no radioactivity?â⬠ââ¬Å"None.â⬠ââ¬Å"Dang,â⬠she sighed. ââ¬Å"Kryptonite doesnââ¬â¢t bother me either,â⬠I said quickly ââ¬â before she could ask about bites ââ¬â and then I had to laugh, because she thought I was a superhero. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re not supposed to laugh, remember?â⬠I pressed my lips together. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll figure it out eventually,â⬠she promised. And when she did, she would run. ââ¬Å"I wish you wouldnââ¬â¢t try,â⬠I said, all teasing gone. ââ¬Å"Becauseâ⬠¦?â⬠I owed her honesty. Still, I tried to smile, to make my words sound less threatening. ââ¬Å"What if Iââ¬â¢m not a superhero? What if Iââ¬â¢m the bad guy?â⬠Her eyes widened by a fraction and her lips fell slightly apart. ââ¬Å"Oh,â⬠she said. And then, after another second, ââ¬Å"I see.â⬠Sheââ¬â¢d finally heard me. ââ¬Å"Do you?â⬠I asked, working to conceal my agony. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re dangerous?â⬠she guessed. Her breathing hiked, and her heart raced. I couldnââ¬â¢t answer her. Was this my last moment with her? Would she run now? Could I be allowed to tell her that I loved her before she left? Or would that frighten her more? ââ¬Å"But not bad,â⬠she whispered, shaking her head, no fear in her clear eyes. ââ¬Å"No, I donââ¬â¢t believe that youââ¬â¢re bad.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re wrong,â⬠I breathed. Of course I was bad. Wasnââ¬â¢t I rejoicing now, that she thought better of me than I deserved? If I were a good person, I would have stayed away from her. I stretched my hand across the table, reaching for the lid to her lemonade bottle as an excuse. She did not flinch away from my suddenly closer hand. She really was not afraid of me. Not yet. I spun the lid like a top, watching it instead of her. My thoughts were in a snarl. Run, Bella, run. I couldnââ¬â¢t make myself say the words out loud. She jumped to her feet. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to be late,â⬠she said, just as Iââ¬â¢d started to worry that sheââ¬â¢d somehow heard my silent warning. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m not going to class.â⬠ââ¬Å"Why not?â⬠Because I donââ¬â¢t want to kill you. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s healthy to ditch class now and then.â⬠To be precise, it was healthier for the humans if the vampires ditched on days when human blood would be spilt. Mr. Banner was blood typing today. Alice had already ditched her morning class. ââ¬Å"Well, Iââ¬â¢m going,â⬠she said. This didnââ¬â¢t surprise me. She was responsible ââ¬â she always did the right thing. She was my opposite. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll see you later then,â⬠I said, trying for casual again, staring down at the whirling lid. And, by the way, I adore youâ⬠¦in frightening, dangerous ways. She hesitated, and I hoped for a moment that she would stay with me after all. But the bell rang and she hurried away. I waited until she was gone, and then I put the lid in my pocket ââ¬â a souvenir of this most consequential conversation ââ¬â and walked through the rain to my car. I put on my favorite calming CD ââ¬â the same one Iââ¬â¢d listened to that first day ââ¬â but I wasnââ¬â¢t hearing Debussyââ¬â¢s notes for long. Other notes were running through my head, a fragment of a tune that pleased and intrigued me. I turned down the stereo and listened to the music in my head, playing with the fragment until it evolved into a fuller harmony. Instinctively, my fingers moved in the air over imaginary piano keys. The new composition was really coming along when my attention was caught by a wave of mental anguish. I looked toward the distress. Is she going to pass out? What do I do? Mike panicked. A hundred yards away, Mike Newton was lowering Bellaââ¬â¢s limp body to the sidewalk. She slumped unresponsively against the wet concrete, her eyes closed, her skin chalky as a corpse. I almost took the door off the car. ââ¬Å"Bella?â⬠I shouted. There was no change in her lifeless face when I yelled her name. My whole body went colder than ice. I was aware of Mikeââ¬â¢s aggravated surprise as I sifted furiously through his thoughts. He was only thinking of his anger toward me, so I didnââ¬â¢t know what was wrong with Bella. If heââ¬â¢d done something to harm her, I would annihilate him. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s wrong ââ¬â is she hurt?â⬠I demanded, trying to focus his thoughts. It was maddening to have to walk at a human pace. I should not have called attention to my approach. Then I could hear her heart beating and her even breath. As I watched, she squeezed her eyes more tightly shut. That eased some of my panic. I saw a flicker of memories in Mikeââ¬â¢s head, a splash of images from the Biology room. Bellaââ¬â¢s head on our table, her fair skin turning green. Drops of red against the white cardsâ⬠¦ Blood typing. I stopped where I was, holding my breath. Her scent was one thing, her flowing blood was another altogether. ââ¬Å"I think sheââ¬â¢s fainted,â⬠Mike said, anxious and resentful at the same time. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t know what happened, she didnââ¬â¢t even stick her finger.â⬠Relief washed through me, and I breathed again, tasting the air. Ah, I could smell the tiny flow of Mike Newtonââ¬â¢s puncture wound. Once, that might have appealed to me. I knelt beside her while Mike hovered next to me, furious at my intervention. ââ¬Å"Bella. Can you hear me?â⬠ââ¬Å"No,â⬠she moaned. ââ¬Å"Go away.â⬠The relief was so exquisite that I laughed. She was fine. ââ¬Å"I was taking her to the nurse,â⬠Mike said. ââ¬Å"But she wouldnââ¬â¢t go any farther.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll take her. You can go back to class,â⬠I said dismissively. Mikeââ¬â¢s teeth clenched together. ââ¬Å"No. Iââ¬â¢m supposed to do it.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t going to stand around arguing with the wretch. Thrilled and terrified, half-grateful to and half-aggrieved by the predicament which made touching her a necessity, I gently lifted Bella from the sidewalk and held her in my arms, touching only her clothes, keeping as much distance between our bodies as possible. I was striding forward in the same movement, in a hurry to have her safe ââ¬â farther away from me, in other words. Her eyes popped open, astonished. ââ¬Å"Put me down,â⬠she ordered in a weak voice ââ¬â embarrassed again, I guessed from her expression. She didnââ¬â¢t like to show weakness. I barely heard Mikeââ¬â¢s shouted protest behind us. ââ¬Å"You look awful,â⬠I told her, grinning because there was nothing wrong with her but a light head and a weak stomach. ââ¬Å"Put me back on the sidewalk,â⬠she said. Her lips were white. ââ¬Å"So you faint at the sight of blood?â⬠Could it get any more ironic? She closed her eyes and pressed her lips together. ââ¬Å"And not even your own blood,â⬠I added, my grin widening. We were to the front office. The door was propped an inch open, and I kicked it out of my way. Ms. Cope jumped, startled. ââ¬Å"Oh, my,â⬠she gasped as she examined the ashen girl in my arms. ââ¬Å"She fainted in Biology,â⬠I explained, before her imagination could get too out of hand. Ms. Cope hurried to open the door to the nurseââ¬â¢s office. Bellaââ¬â¢s eyes were open again, watching her. I heard the elderly nurseââ¬â¢s internal astonishment as I laid the girl carefully on the one shabby bed. As soon as Bella was out of my arms, I put the width of the room between us. My body was too excited, too eager, my muscles tense and the venom flowing. She was so warm and fragrant. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s just a little faint,â⬠I reassured Mrs. Hammond. ââ¬Å"Theyââ¬â¢re blood typing in biology.â⬠She nodded, understanding now. ââ¬Å"Thereââ¬â¢s always one.â⬠I stifled a laugh. Trust Bella to be that one. ââ¬Å"Just lie down for a minute, honey,â⬠Mrs. Hammond said. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢ll pass.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know,â⬠Bella said. ââ¬Å"Does this happen often?â⬠the nurse asked. ââ¬Å"Sometimes,â⬠Bella admitted. I tried to disguise my laughter as coughing. This brought me to the nurseââ¬â¢s attention. ââ¬Å"You can go back to class now,â⬠she said. I looked her straight in the eye and lied with perfect confidence. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m supposed to stay with her.â⬠Hmm. I wonderâ⬠¦ oh well. Mrs. Hammond nodded. It worked just fine on her. Why did Bella have to be so difficult? ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll go get you some ice for your forehead, dear,â⬠the nurse said, slightly uncomfortable from looking into my eyes ââ¬â the way a human should be ââ¬â and left the room. ââ¬Å"You were right,â⬠Bella moaned, closing her eyes. What did she mean? I jumped to the worst conclusion: sheââ¬â¢d accepted my warnings. ââ¬Å"I usually am,â⬠I said, trying to keep the amusement in my voice; it sounded sour now. ââ¬Å"But about what in particular this time?â⬠ââ¬Å"Ditching is healthy,â⬠she sighed. Ah, relief again. She was silent then. She just breathed slowly in and out. Her lips were beginning to turn pink. Her mouth was slightly out of balance, her lower lip just a little too full to match the top. Staring at her mouth made me feel strange. Made me want to move closer to her, which was not a good idea. ââ¬Å"You scared me for a minute there,â⬠I said ââ¬â to restart the conversation so that I could hear her voice again. ââ¬Å"I thought Newton was dragging your dead body off to bury it in the woods.â⬠ââ¬Å"Ha ha,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Honestly ââ¬â Iââ¬â¢ve seen corpses with better color.â⬠This was actually true. ââ¬Å"I was concerned that I might have to avenge your murder.â⬠And I would have. ââ¬Å"Poor Mike,â⬠she sighed. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll bet heââ¬â¢s mad.â⬠Fury pulsed through me, but I contained it quickly. Her concern was surely just pity. She was kind. That was all. ââ¬Å"He absolutely loathes me,â⬠I told her, cheered by that idea. ââ¬Å"You canââ¬â¢t know that.â⬠ââ¬Å"I saw his face ââ¬â I could tell.â⬠It was probably true that reading his face would have given me enough information to make that particular deduction. All this practice with Bella was sharpening my skill at reading human expressions. ââ¬Å"How did you see me? I thought you were ditching.â⬠Her face looked better ââ¬â the green undertone had vanished from her translucent skin. ââ¬Å"I was in my car, listening to a CD.â⬠Her expression twitched, like my very ordinary answer had surprised her somehow. She opened her eyes again when Mrs. Hammond returned with an ice pack. ââ¬Å"Here you go, dear,â⬠the nurse said as she laid it across Bellaââ¬â¢s forehead. ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re looking better.â⬠ââ¬Å"I think Iââ¬â¢m fine,â⬠Bella said, and she sat up while pulling the ice pack away. Of course. She didnââ¬â¢t like to be taken care of. Mrs. Hammondââ¬â¢s wrinkled hands fluttered toward the girl, as if she were going to push her back down, but just then Ms. Cope opened the door to the office and leaned in. With her appearance came the smell of fresh blood, just a whiff. Invisible in the office behind her, Mike Newton was still very angry, wishing the heavy boy he dragged now was the girl who was in here with me. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢ve got another one,â⬠Ms. Cope said. Bella quickly jumped down from the cot, eager to be out of the spotlight. ââ¬Å"Here,â⬠she said, handing the compress back to Mrs. Hammond. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t need this.â⬠Mike grunted as he half-shoved Lee Stevens through the door. Blood was still dripping down the hand Lee held to his face, trickling toward his wrist. ââ¬Å"Oh no.â⬠This was my cue to leave ââ¬â and Bellaââ¬â¢s, too, it seemed. ââ¬Å"Get out to the office, Bella.â⬠She stared up at me with bewildered eyes. ââ¬Å"Trust me ââ¬â go.â⬠She whirled and caught the door before it had swung shut, rushing through to the office. I followed a few inches behind her. Her swinging hair brushed my handâ⬠¦ She turned to look at me, still wide-eyed. ââ¬Å"You actually listened to me.â⬠That was a first. Her small nose wrinkled. ââ¬Å"I smelled the blood.â⬠I stared at her in blank surprise. ââ¬Å"People canââ¬â¢t smell blood.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well, I can ââ¬â thatââ¬â¢s what makes me sick. It smells like rustâ⬠¦and salt.â⬠My face froze, still staring. Was she really even human? She looked human. She felt soft as a human. She smelled human ââ¬â well, better actually. She acted humanâ⬠¦sort of. But she didnââ¬â¢t think like a human, or respond like one. What other option was there, though? ââ¬Å"What?â⬠she demanded. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s nothing.â⬠Mike Newton interrupted us then, entering the room with resentful, violent thoughts. ââ¬Å"You look better,â⬠he said to her rudely. My hand twitched, wanting to teach him some manners. I would have to watch myself, or I would end up actually killing this obnoxious boy. ââ¬Å"Just keep your hand in your pocket,â⬠she said. For one wild second, I thought she was talking to me. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s not bleeding anymore,â⬠he answered sullenly. ââ¬Å"Are you going back to class?â⬠ââ¬Å"Are you kidding? Iââ¬â¢d just have to turn around and come back.â⬠That was very good. Iââ¬â¢d thought I was going to have to miss this whole hour with her, and now I got extra time instead. I felt greedy, a miser hording over each minute. ââ¬Å"Yeah, I guessâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Mike mumbled. ââ¬Å"So are you going this weekend? To the beach?â⬠Ah, they had plans. Anger froze me in place. It was a group trip, though. Iââ¬â¢d seen some of this in other studentsââ¬â¢ heads. It wasnââ¬â¢t just the two of them. I was still furious. I leaned motionlessly against the counter, trying to control myself. ââ¬Å"Sure, I said I was in,â⬠she promised him. So sheââ¬â¢d said yes to him, too. The jealousy burned, more painful than thirst. No, it was just a group outing, I tried to convince myself. She was just spending the day with friends. Nothing more. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re meeting at my dadââ¬â¢s store, at ten.â⬠And Cullenââ¬â¢s NOT invited. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll be there,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll see you in Gym, then.â⬠ââ¬Å"See you,â⬠she replied. He shuffled off to his class, his thoughts full of ire. What does she see in that freak? Sure, heââ¬â¢s rich, I guess. Chicks think heââ¬â¢s hot, but I donââ¬â¢t see that. Tooâ⬠¦too perfect. I bet his dad experiments with plastic surgery on all of them. Thatââ¬â¢s why theyââ¬â¢re all so white and pretty. Itââ¬â¢s not natural. And heââ¬â¢s sort ofâ⬠¦scary-looking. Sometimes, when he stares at me, Iââ¬â¢d swear heââ¬â¢s thinking about killing meâ⬠¦ Freakâ⬠¦ Mike wasnââ¬â¢t entirely unperceptive. ââ¬Å"Gym,â⬠Bella repeated quietly. A groan. I looked at her, and saw that she was sad about something again. I wasnââ¬â¢t sure why, but it was clear that she didnââ¬â¢t want to go to her next class with Mike, and I was all for that plan. I went to her side and bent close to her face, feeling the warmth of her skin radiating out to my lips. I didnââ¬â¢t dare breathe. ââ¬Å"I can take care of that,â⬠I murmured. ââ¬Å"Go sit down and look pale.â⬠She did as I asked, sitting in one of the folding chairs and leaning her head back against the wall, while, behind me, Ms. Cope came out of the back room and went to her desk. With her eyes closed, Bella looked as if sheââ¬â¢d passed out again. Her full color hadnââ¬â¢t returned yet. I turned to the secretary. Hopefully Bella was paying attention to this, I thought sardonically. This was how a human was supposed to respond. ââ¬Å"Ms. Cope?â⬠I asked, using my persuasive voice again. Her eyelashes fluttered, and her heart sped up. Too young, get a hold of yourself! ââ¬Å"Yes?â⬠That was interesting. When Shelly Copeââ¬â¢s pulse quickened, it was because she found me physically attractive, not because she was frightened. I was used to that around human femalesâ⬠¦yet I hadnââ¬â¢t considered that explanation for Bellaââ¬â¢s racing heart. I rather liked that. Too much, in fact. I smiled, and Mrs. Copeââ¬â¢s breathing got louder. ââ¬Å"Bella has gym next hour, and I donââ¬â¢t think she feels well enough. Actually, I was thinking I should take her home now. Do you think you could excuse her from class?â⬠I stared into her depthless eyes, enjoying the havoc that this wreaked on her thought processes. Was it possible that Bellaâ⬠¦? Mrs. Cope had to swallow loudly before she answered. ââ¬Å"Do you need to be excused, too, Edward?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I have Mrs. Goff, she wonââ¬â¢t mind.â⬠I wasnââ¬â¢t paying much attention to her now. I was exploring this new possibility. Hmm. Iââ¬â¢d like to believe that Bella found me attractive like other humans did, but when did Bella ever have the same reactions as other humans? I shouldnââ¬â¢t get my hopes up. ââ¬Å"Okay, itââ¬â¢s all taken care of. You feel better, Bella.â⬠Bella nodded weakly ââ¬â overacting a bit. ââ¬Å"Can you walk, or do you want me to carry you again?â⬠I asked, amused by her poor theatrics. I knew she would want to walk ââ¬â she wouldnââ¬â¢t want to be weak. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll walk,â⬠she said. Right again. I was getting better at this. She got up, hesitating for a moment as if to check her balance. I held the door for her, and we walked out into the rain. I watched her as she lifted her face to the light rain with her eyes closed, a slight smile on her lips. What was she thinking? Something about this action seemed off, and I quickly realized why the posture looked unfamiliar to me. Normal human girls wouldnââ¬â¢t raise their faces to the drizzle that way; normal human girls usually wore makeup, even here in this wet place. Bella never wore makeup, nor should she. The cosmetics industry made billions of dollars a year from women who were trying to attain skin like hers. ââ¬Å"Thanks,â⬠she said, smiling at me now. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s worth getting sick to miss Gym.â⬠I stared across the campus, wondering how to prolong my time with her. ââ¬Å"Anytime,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"So are you going? This Saturday, I mean?â⬠She sounded hopeful. Ah, her hope was soothing. She wanted me with her, not Mike Newton. And I wanted to say yes. But there were many things to consider. For one, the sun would be shining this Saturdayâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"Where are you all going, exactly?â⬠I tried to keep my voice nonchalant, as if it didnââ¬â¢t matter much. Mike had said beach, though. Not much chance of avoiding sunlight there. ââ¬Å"Down to La Push, to First Beach.â⬠Damn. Well, it was impossible, then. Anyway, Emmett would be irritated if I cancelled our plans. I glanced down at her, smiling wryly. ââ¬Å"I really donââ¬â¢t think I was invited.â⬠She sighed, already resigned. ââ¬Å"I just invited you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Letââ¬â¢s you and I not push poor Mike any further this week. We donââ¬â¢t want him to snap.â⬠I thought about snapping poor Mike myself, and enjoyed the mental picture intensely. ââ¬Å"Mike-schmike,â⬠she said, dismissive again. I smiled widely. And then she started to walk away from me. Without thinking about my action, I reached out and caught her by the back of her rain jacket. She jerked to a stop. ââ¬Å"Where do you think youââ¬â¢re going?â⬠I was almost angry that she was leaving me. I hadnââ¬â¢t had enough time with her. She couldnââ¬â¢t go, not yet. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m going home,â⬠she said, baffled as to why this should upset me. ââ¬Å"Didnââ¬â¢t you hear me promise to take you safely home? Do you think Iââ¬â¢m going to let you drive in your condition?â⬠I knew she wouldnââ¬â¢t like that ââ¬â my implication of weakness on her part. But I needed to practice for the Seattle trip, anyway. See if I could handle her proximity in an enclosed space. This was a much shorter journey. ââ¬Å"What condition?â⬠she demanded. ââ¬Å"And what about my truck?â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll have Alice drop it off after school.â⬠I pulled her back to my car carefully, as I now knew that walking forward was challenging enough for her. ââ¬Å"Let go!â⬠she said, twisting sideways and nearly tripping. I held one hand out to catch her, but she righted herself before it was necessary. I shouldnââ¬â¢t be looking for excuses to touch her. That started me thinking about Ms. Copeââ¬â¢s reaction to me, but I filed it away for later. There was much to be considered on that front. I let her go beside the car, and she stumbled into the door. I would have to be even more careful, to take into account her poor balanceâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"You are so pushy!â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s open.â⬠I got in on my side and started the car. She held her body rigidly, still outside, though the rain had picked up and I knew she didnââ¬â¢t like the cold and wet. Water was soaking through her thick hair, darkening it to near black. ââ¬Å"I am perfectly capable of driving myself home!â⬠Of course she was ââ¬â I just wasnââ¬â¢t capable of letting her go. I rolled her window down and leaned toward her. ââ¬Å"Get in, Bella.â⬠Her eyes narrowed, and I guessed that she was debating whether or not to make a run for it. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll just drag you back,â⬠I promised, enjoying the chagrin on her face when she realized I meant it. Her chin stiffly in the air, she opened her door and climbed in. Her hair dripped on the leather and her boots squeaked against each other. ââ¬Å"This is completely unnecessary,â⬠she said coldly. I thought she looked embarrassed under the pique. I just turned up the heater so she wouldnââ¬â¢t be uncomfortable, and set the music to a nice background level. I drove out toward the exit, watching her from the corner of my eye. Her lower lip was jutting out stubbornly. I stared at this, examining how it made me feelâ⬠¦ thinking of the secretaryââ¬â¢s reaction againâ⬠¦ Suddenly she looked at the stereo and smiled, her eyes widening. ââ¬Å"Clair de Lune?â⬠she asked. A fan of the classics? ââ¬Å"You know Debussy?â⬠ââ¬Å"Not well,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"My mother plays a lot of classical music around the house ââ¬â I only know my favorites.â⬠ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s one of my favorites, too.â⬠I stared at the rain, considering that. I actually had something in common with the girl. Iââ¬â¢d begun to think that we were opposites in every way. She seemed more relaxed now, staring at the rain like me, with unseeing eyes. I used her momentary distraction to experiment with breathing. I inhaled carefully through my nose. Potent. I clutched the steering wheel tighter. The rain made her smell better. I wouldnââ¬â¢t have thought that was possible. Stupidly, I was suddenly imaging how she would taste. I tried to swallow against the burn in my throat, to think of something else. ââ¬Å"What is your mother like?â⬠I asked as a distraction. Bella smiled. ââ¬Å"She looks a lot like me, but sheââ¬â¢s prettier.â⬠I doubted that. ââ¬Å"I have too much Charlie in me,â⬠she went on. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s more outgoing than I am, and braver.â⬠I doubted that, too. ââ¬Å"Sheââ¬â¢s irresponsible and slightly eccentric, and sheââ¬â¢s a very unpredictable cook. Sheââ¬â¢s my best friend.â⬠Her voice had turned melancholy; her forehead creased. Again, she sounded more like parent than child. I stopped in front of her house, wondering too late if I was supposed to know where she lived. No, this wouldnââ¬â¢t be suspicious in such a small town, with her father a public figureâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"How old are you, Bella?â⬠She must be older than her peers. Perhaps sheââ¬â¢d been late to start school, or been held backâ⬠¦that wasnââ¬â¢t likely, though. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m seventeen,â⬠she answered. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t seem seventeen.â⬠She laughed. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"My mom always says I was born thirty-five years old and that I get more middleaged every year.â⬠She laughed again, and then sighed. ââ¬Å"Well, someone has to be the adult.â⬠This clarified things for me. I could see it nowâ⬠¦how the irresponsible mother helped explain Bellaââ¬â¢s maturity. Sheââ¬â¢d had to grow up early, to become the caretaker. Thatââ¬â¢s why she didnââ¬â¢t like being cared for ââ¬â she felt it was her job. ââ¬Å"You donââ¬â¢t seem much like a junior in high school yourself,â⬠she said, pulling me from my reverie. I grimaced. For everything I perceived about her, she perceived too much in return. I changed the subject. ââ¬Å"So why did your mother marry Phil?â⬠She hesitated a minute before answering. ââ¬Å"My motherâ⬠¦sheââ¬â¢s very young for her age. I think Phil makes her feel even younger. At any rate, sheââ¬â¢s crazy about him.â⬠She shook her head indulgently. ââ¬Å"Do you approve?â⬠I wondered. ââ¬Å"Does it matter?â⬠she asked. ââ¬Å"I want her to be happyâ⬠¦and he is who she wants.â⬠The unselfishness of her comment would have shocked me, except that it fit in all too well with what Iââ¬â¢d learned of her character. ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s very generousâ⬠¦I wonder.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠ââ¬Å"Would she extend the same courtesy to you, do you think? No matter who your choice was?â⬠It was a foolish question, and I could not keep my voice casual while I asked it. How stupid to even consider someone approving of me for their daughter. How stupid to even think of Bella choosing me. ââ¬Å"I-I think so,â⬠she stuttered, reacting in some way to my gaze. Fearâ⬠¦or attraction? ââ¬Å"But sheââ¬â¢s the parent, after all. Itââ¬â¢s a little bit different,â⬠she finished. I smiled wryly. ââ¬Å"No one too scary then.â⬠She grinned at me. ââ¬Å"What do you mean by scary? Multiple facial piercings and extensive tattoos?â⬠ââ¬Å"Thatââ¬â¢s one definition, I suppose.â⬠A very nonthreatening definition, to my mind. ââ¬Å"Whatââ¬â¢s your definition?â⬠She always asked the wrong questions. Or exactly the right questions, maybe. The ones I didnââ¬â¢t want to answer, at any rate. ââ¬Å"Do you think that I could be scary?â⬠I asked her, trying to smile a little. She thought it through before answering me in a serious voice. ââ¬Å"Hmmâ⬠¦I think you could be, if you wanted to.â⬠I was serious, too. ââ¬Å"Are you frightened of me now?â⬠She answered at once, not thinking this one through. ââ¬Å"No.â⬠I smiled more easily. I did not think she was entirely telling the truth, but nor was she truly lying. She wasnââ¬â¢t frightened enough to want to leave, at least. I wondered how she would feel if I told her she was having this discussion with a vampire. I cringed internally at her imagined reaction. ââ¬Å"So, now are you going to tell me about your family? Itââ¬â¢s got to be a much more interesting story than mine.â⬠A more frightening one, at least. ââ¬Å"What do you want to know?â⬠I asked cautiously. ââ¬Å"The Cullens adopted you?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes.â⬠She hesitated, then spoke in a small voice. ââ¬Å"What happened to your parents?â⬠This wasnââ¬â¢t so hard; I wasnââ¬â¢t even having to lie to her. ââ¬Å"They died a very long time ago.â⬠ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sorry,â⬠she mumbled, clearly worried about having hurt me. She was worried about me. ââ¬Å"I donââ¬â¢t really remember them that clearly,â⬠I assured her. ââ¬Å"Carlisle and Esme have been my parents for a long time now.â⬠ââ¬Å"And you love them,â⬠she deduced. I smiled. ââ¬Å"Yes. I couldnââ¬â¢t imagine two better people.â⬠ââ¬Å"Youââ¬â¢re very lucky.â⬠ââ¬Å"I know I am.â⬠In that one circumstance, the matter of parents, my luck could not be denied. ââ¬Å"And your brother and sisters?â⬠If I let her push for too many details, I would have to lie. I glanced at the clock, disheartened that my time with her was up. ââ¬Å"My brother and sister, and Jasper and Rosalie for that matter, are going to be quite upset if they have to stand in the rain waiting for me.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh, sorry, I guess you have to go.â⬠She didnââ¬â¢t move. She didnââ¬â¢t want our time to be up, either. I liked that very, very much. ââ¬Å"And you probably want your truck back before Chief Swan gets home, so you donââ¬â¢t have to tell him about the Biology incident.â⬠I grinned at the memory of her embarrassment in my arms. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢m sure heââ¬â¢s already heard. There are no secrets in Forks.â⬠She said the name of the town with distinct distaste. I laughed at her words. No secrets, indeed. ââ¬Å"Have fun at the beach.â⬠I glanced at the pouring rain, knowing it would not last, and wishing more strongly than usual that it could. ââ¬Å"Good weather for sunbathing.â⬠Well, it would be by Saturday. She would enjoy that. ââ¬Å"Wonââ¬â¢t I see you tomorrow?â⬠The worry in her tone pleased me. ââ¬Å"No. Emmett and I are starting the weekend early.â⬠I was mad at myself now for having made the plans. I could break themâ⬠¦but there was no such thing as too much hunting at this point, and my family was going to be concerned enough about my behavior without me revealing how obsessive I was turning. ââ¬Å"What are you going to do?â⬠she asked, not sounded happy with my revelation. Good. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re going to be hiking in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, just south of Rainier.â⬠Emmett was eager for bear season. ââ¬Å"Oh, well, have fun,â⬠she said halfheartedly. Her lack of enthusiasm pleased me again. As I stared at her, I began to feel almost agonized at the thought of saying even a temporary goodbye. She was just so soft and vulnerable. It seemed foolhardy to let her out of my sight, where anything could happen to her. And yet, the worst things that could happen to her would result from being with me. ââ¬Å"Will you do something for me this weekend?â⬠I asked seriously. She nodded, her eyes wide and bewildered by my intensity. Keep it light. ââ¬Å"Donââ¬â¢t be offended, but you seem to be one of those people who just attract accidents like a magnet. Soâ⬠¦try not to fall into the ocean or get run over or anything, all right?â⬠I smiled ruefully at her, hoping she couldnââ¬â¢t see the sadness in my eyes. How much I wished that she wasnââ¬â¢t so much better off away from me, no matter what might happen to her there. Run, Bella, run. I love you too much, for your good or mine. She was offended by my teasing. She glared at me. ââ¬Å"Iââ¬â¢ll see what I can do,â⬠she snapped, jumping out into the rain and slamming the door as hard as she could behind her. Just like an angry kitten that believes itââ¬â¢s a tiger. I curled my hand around the key Iââ¬â¢d just picked from her jacket pocket, and smiled as I drove away. The Relation of the Dietary Fat-Free-Samples for Students
Question: Discuss about the relation of the dietary fat with the risk of the Cardiovascular disease. Answer: Introduction The relation of the dietary fat with the risk of the cardiovascular disease has been studied by using different approaches. These approaches include the controlled feeding studies. The approaches are surrogated, for example plasma lipid. The dietary fatty acids have the important role in case of the causes of cardio vascular disease (Schwab et al., 2014). Trans fatty acids of the partially hydrogenated vegetable oil has adverse effect on the heart and causes serious heart problems such as cardio vascular disease and coronary heart disease. The rate heart can be reduced when the trans fatty acid consumption can be reduced (Lachhiramka Patil, 2016). Moreover, the saturated fat needs to be replaced by the unsaturated fats like mono and ploy unsaturated fat. However, the carbohydrate can replace the people who have prone to cardio vascular disease needs to avoid the fat consumption and it. The consumption of egg can be avoided to reduce the adverse effect of cholesterol on the cardio va scular disease (Estruch et al., 2013). Rationale The present issue is the consumption of fat and cholesterol, which has a negative effect on the health. This can cause dangerous health issues such as cardio vascular disease, coronary heart attack, and chronic heart disease (Michas, Micha Zampelas, 2014). Intake of dietary saturated fat can help to reduce the low- density lipoprotein and cholesterol. Both the factors are associated with the increased the risk of the cardio vascular disease. This can be evident with the inference from the epidemiological studies and the clinical trials. This can lead to the longstanding public health that recommends limiting the saturated fat intake. This can help to prevent the cardio vascular disease. The relationship in between the saturated fat and the cardio vascular disease is controversial. The prospective epidemiology can be limited by the reliance on the nutritional assessment that helps to identify the accuracy (Mozaffarian, 2016). The people, who are prone to the cardio vascular risk need s to modify their diet and avoid the foods rich in fat and cholesterol. Material and Methods Appropriate inclusion and exclusion criteria For the particular study, various inclusion and exclusion criteria were used. For the review purpose, only those article were chosen, which are found in English and the access were full. Some of the key words were used to find out the journals and articles. The key words are trans fat, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, chronic heart disease, cardio vascular disease, cholesterol, coronary heart attack, epidemiology, and relationship between the diseases. The incomplete articles and journals were excluded. Some of the journals and articles were found in other languages that were excluded. Some articles were found, which were not relevant to the topic and provided irrelevant data. Those articles and journals are excluded. Fig: Prisma Diagram Definition of variables The independent variable is the egg consumption and on the other hand, the dependent variable is the cardio vascular disease as well as the diabetes. The consumption of eggs has significant role in case of muscle formation. However, it increases the risk of the heart disease like cardio vascular disease. Eggs produce approximately 300 mg of cholesterol per day (Mozaffarian Ludwig, 2015). According to Wang, Willett and Hu (2017), a healthy person should not consume more than three hundred mg cholesterol per day. In case of cardio vascular disease, the people should avoid the foods, which are high in cholesterol, and fat. They need to limit their cholesterol intake to 200 mg per day. Eggs contain cholesterol that can affect the patients, who are at the high risk of cardio vascular disease. However, from various studies, it is seen that egg consumption does not have direct effect on the cardio vascular disease. However, the people who are suffering type 2 diabetes have more risk to con sume eggs than the people who are suffering from cardio vascular disease (De Souza et al., 2015). Therefore, people need to be careful about their diet to avoid the risks of severe chronic diseases. Description of statistical analysis From the study, it is known that various models are used to estimate the HRs and 95% of Cls. In the Meta analysis study, the heart rate of cardio vascular disease, stroke, ischemic heart disease and type 2 diabetes as well as coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and coronary heart disease (Ramsden et al., 2013). In addition, the pooled heart rate over cardio vascular disease, ischemic heart disease was addressed properly. The patient with diabetes and cardio vascular disease was observed and important information was collected. As the numbers of the exposure categories were heterogeneous across the cohorts or the primary study, the standardized consumption of eggs were not included in the study. The result was generated from the different studies of different publication. Most of the studies stated the result of the hemorrhagic stroke as well as ischemic stroke. However, it was not possible to find out the result of total stroke. The new result helped to find out the poole d estimation of the stroke risk. In the study, the heart rates with the 95% Cls over the cardio vascular disease and the mortality rate were pooled (Chomistek et al., 2015). For the statistical analysis, the STATA statistical software was used. The P value of 0.05 was considered as the significant statistical data. Figure 1: Rate of coronary death rate that is plotted against the percentage of calorie intake by saturated fatty acid (Source: Cahill et al., 2014) Figure 2: Mortality from degenerative heart disease (Source: Wang et al., 2014) The national vital statistics from the official sources showed that the fat calories are the percentage of the total calories. This is calculated by the national Food Balance Data in 1949 (Wang et al., 2014). The Nutrition Division, Food, and Agriculture Organization of United Nations calculated this. Ethics: According to the Data Protection Act (1998), the researcher needs to maintain the principles of the ethical guidelines and protect the collected information. The collected data needs to be utilized only in the research work and before collecting the information from the participants, it is necessary to take their consent. Description of criteria to evaluate evidence The age, sex, BMI status, history of hyper cholesterol, alcohol consumption and hypertension are considered as the parameter. It is seen that among the 8000 people every year 1921 people dies from cardio vascular disease every year approximately (Schwab et al. 2014). For the research, different approaches were taken like self- administered questionnaire, telephonic interview, face- to- face interview, online survey, physicians self- reports, and medical records. For the data collection, probability technique was taken as the time was to conduct the research. The prospective epidemiology can be limited by the reliance on the nutritional assessment that helps to identify the accuracy. The people, who are prone to the cardio vascular risk needs to modify their diet and avoid the foods rich in fat and cholesterol. The relation of the dietary fat with the risk of the cardiovascular disease has been studied by using different approaches (Estruch et al., 2013). These approaches include the controlled feeding studies. The approaches are surrogated, for example plasma lipid. The dietary fatty acids have the important role in case of the causes of cardio vascular disease. Result section Classified studies The data collection method was appropriate. For the data collection, various studies were chosen based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The classified studies provide various results and information, which helped to analyze the study topic. From fifferent databases such as Pub Med, NCBI, Science Direct, Cinahl, Charles Darwin University link, and Google scholar. Various results were found from the databases are used. The articles and journals were chosen based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The key words are trans fat, saturated fat, unsaturated fat, chronic heart disease, cardio vascular disease, cholesterol, coronary heart attack, epidemiology, and relationship between the diseases. Summary of overall findings Trans fatty acids of the partially hydrogenated vegetable oil has adverse effect on the heart and causes serious heart problems such as cardio vascular disease and coronary heart disease. However, the carbohydrate can replace the people who have prone to cardio vascular disease needs to avoid the fat consumption and it. The prospective epidemiology can be limited by the reliance on the nutritional assessment that helps to identify the accuracy (Wang et al., 2014). Therefore, people need to be careful about their diet to avoid the risks of severe chronic diseases. The people, who are prone to the cardio vascul ar risk needs to modify their diet and avoid the foods rich in fat and cholesterol. Explanation of conflict results According to Luo et al., (2016) the rate heart can be reduced when the trans fatty acid consumption can be reduced. Moreover, the saturated fat needs to be replaced by the unsaturated fats like mono and ploy unsaturated fat. On the other hand, Boeing and Margetts (2014) argued that egg consumption does not have direct effect on the cardio vascular disease. However, the people who are suffering type 2 diabetes have more risk to consume eggs than the people who are suffering from cardio vascular disease. The people, who are prone to the cardio vascular risk needs to modify their diet and avoid the foods rich in fat and cholesterol. The relation of the dietary fat with the risk of the cardiovascular disease has been studied by using different approaches. Therefore, people need to be careful about their diet to avoid the risks of severe chronic diseases. The prospective epidemiology can be limited by the reliance on the nutritional assessment that helps to identify the accuracy (National Research Council., 2015). Recommendation for future research The relation of the dietary fat with the risk of the cardiovascular disease has been studied by using different approaches. The rate heart can be reduced when the trans fatty acid consumption can be reduced. Moreover, the saturated fat needs to be replaced by the unsaturated fats like mono and ploy unsaturated fat. The consumption of egg can be avoided to reduce the adverse effect of cholesterol on the cardio vascular disease. Intake of dietary saturated fat can help to reduce the low- density lipoprotein and cholesterol. This can lead to the longstanding public health that recommends limiting the saturated fat intake. The prospective epidemiology can be limited by the reliance on the nutritional assessment that helps to identify the accuracy. In this respect, Estruch et al., (2013) stated that the people, who are prone to the cardio vascular risk needs to modify their diet and avoid the foods rich in fat and cholesterol. Moreover, people need to practice the moderate physical exerci se to avoid the health diseases like coronary heart disease and cardio vascular disease. They need to maintain their BMI status, which increases the risk of cardio vascular disease. It can be expected that in future days, the rate of cardio vascular rate will be decreased with the risk of mortality due to cardio vascular disease. Identified gaps The variables can be identified more preciously, which needs to be strong. For the statistical analysis, more evidence based study was necessary. Due to the limited time limit, sufficient amount of data was not collected and the researcher did not get enough time to research about the topic. The key limitation is the lack of appropriate information and evidence. The databases were found with the limited articles and journals. The variables and interactions are experimented for the review. The improvement of data analysis was subjected for interfering of the research bias partiality. For the research study, there was not enough money as the financial support, which limited the access of the articles and journals. Another main limitation of the study was the time- frame of the research. The research did not have enough time so that he could collect the primary data via the qualitative, quantitative, or mixed method. Conclusion: Based on the above discussion and findings, it can be said that percentage of the calories and national death has a strong link. The fat rate from the diet needs to be reduced so that the death rate due to various diseases like cardio vascular disease, coronary disease, diabetes, obesity can be reduced. Various results and the identified gap shoed the reason for which the rate of the of deaths are increasing. It can be expected that the people will follow the dietary guidelines and adopt the healthy practice References Ananthakrishnan, A. N., Khalili, H., Konijeti, G. G., Higuchi, L.
